Unlike traditional talking-head videos where you can cut away to B-roll to fix a pacing issue, a map flyover is a continuous spatial journey. If your narration is too fast, the camera becomes a dizzying blur; if it's too slow, the viewer loses the vital sense of geographic momentum.

The question "how long should it be?" is fundamentally a question of "how much context does the viewer need?" In 2026, viewer attention is a fragmented commodity. To hold it, you must balance information density with visual grace. Mastering duration requires understanding the Temporal Context. A viewer watching a TikTok is looking for a quick hit of curiosity, whereas a YouTube viewer has likely committed to a deeper exploration. Your production length must match this intent or you risk losing your audience within the first few seconds.

Optimized for the loop. Immediate impact, using fast camera arrivals to stop the scroll. These videos typically focus on a single ranking or a 'top 5' list with zero filler. The goal is to provide a massive hit of information in under a minute.

The Explainer (2-5 mins)

YouTube, News, Journalism

The 'Sweet Spot'. Allows for deep-dive focus cards and processing of geographic boundaries. This length is perfect for explaining the 'Why' behind a location—whether it's the growth of a city or the history of a national park.

The Documentary (5-20 mins)

Feature Stories, Tours

Slow, majestic reveals. Camera moves at a stately pace to emphasize terrain volume. These productions are often watched on televisions or desktop monitors, requiring a higher level of detail and a much more relaxed arrival balance.

The Math of Motion

Natural human speech occurs at a rate of approximately 130 to 150 words per minute. This cadence is the pulse of your production. In spatial storytelling, the camera's speed is a function of the narrator's speed.

When a creator mentions a location, the brain requires about 600ms to process the visual arrival and another 1.2 seconds to read any accompanying stat cards. If your total duration per location is less than 3 seconds, you are outrunning your audience's cognitive capacity.

The 130-150 WPM Rule is non-negotiable for high-authority content. If you exceed 160 WPM, you must simplify your visuals, OMIT stat cards, and focus on a single narrative point. Conversely, if you drop below 120 WPM, you must use more complex camera motion—such as slow orbital rotations—to prevent the viewer from getting bored with the static imagery.

Arrival-to-Hold Ratio

Narrative Breadth
