Mapflyover vs Mapimator
Mapimator is a slide-based map editor with an AI assistant — you design each scene and direct the camera yourself. Mapflyover is a script-first studio — you write the story and it builds a narrated, captioned flyover video, or your own AI agent builds it for you. Pick Mapimator for hands-on scene control; pick Mapflyover when the words carry the video.
How each one works
Mapimator works in three steps: pick a map style (its maps are powered by MapLibre), then animate — add routes, markers, highlights and camera movements, slide by slide, with full control over every element — then export. Its AI Director helps with storyboarding and camera work, spending credits as it goes: 3 one-time credits on the free plan, 50 a month on Pro. You can import GeoJSON, GPX and KML tracks and pins from CSV. It is aimed squarely at creators who like to art-direct: 30+ starter templates, detailed regional borders on Pro, and real driving route data.
Mapflyover starts from the script. Paste your text (or describe the video and let AI draft it, or hand the whole job to your own agent — Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client). Each place in the script becomes a scene: the real boundary is found and framed automatically, the 3D camera rises, flies and lands, stat cards appear on cue, narration is generated in the app at no cost, and captions are timed to every spoken word. There are no keyframes to set. Export is an MP4 in 16:9 or 9:16, rendered in your browser — one project produces both the YouTube and the Shorts version.

Pricing comparison
Mapimator's free plan is a taster: 3 projects, 1 export a month at 480p with a watermark, basic templates and styles, and 3 AI Director credits to try. Pro AI Director was listed at $12/month (with $19 struck through) or $99/year when we checked: unlimited projects, 100 exports a month, up to 4K at 60 fps, no watermark, commercial use, premium templates and 50 AI Director credits a month. Agency, at $29/month (listed with $49 struck through) or $290/year, adds 5 seats, a shared workspace and 300 pooled exports. An Enterprise tier adds TV and broadcast rights.
Mapflyover keeps building free for everyone: the full editor, unlimited previews, narration and captions, and a Free plan that never expires and exports 2 MP4s a month at 720p (up to 90 seconds, with a Mapflyover mark). Pro is $20/month — 30 exports up to 1080p and 5 minutes, no mark, 50 projects — with a $3 seven-day trial first. Studio is $70/month for 300 exports up to 4K and 15 minutes across 500 projects. Failed exports do not count.
Two honest differences in shape, not just size. Mapimator's Pro is cheaper per month and includes far more exports — but its AI help is rationed by credits, and when the credits run out the AI Director stops until the next month. Mapflyover charges more for Pro and gives fewer exports, but narration, captions and building are unlimited and free on every plan, and connecting your own agent costs nothing extra — its “credits” are whatever your own assistant plan already includes.
Choose Mapimator if…
- ›You like designing slides and directing every camera move yourself, and you will use its templates.
- ›You need GIF exports, square video, or a shared team workspace with seats.
- ›You make route and battle-map videos with imported GPX/KML tracks and real driving routes.
- ›A lower monthly price with a big export allowance matters more than built-in narration.
Choose Mapflyover if…
- ›Your videos are narrated explainers — geography, history, news, countdowns — where the script comes first and captions must be timed to the voice.
- ›You want real boundaries and country flag fills placed automatically, without tracing or importing shapes.
- ›You publish both 16:9 and 9:16 from every project.
- ›You already use Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant and want it to build the video end-to-end while you review and export.
FAQ
Quick answers
Does Mapimator have narration or captions?
Not in its published feature list — its AI is the AI Director, which helps with storyboarding and camera work. Mapflyover generates narration in the app for free and times captions to every spoken word automatically.
Which free plan is more useful?
Mapflyover’s: full editor, narration and captions, unlimited previews and 2 exports a month at 720p, forever. Mapimator’s free plan allows 1 export a month at 480p with a watermark and 3 projects — enough to sample the editor, not to run a channel.
Can an AI agent make the whole video in each tool?
In Mapflyover, yes — connect your own agent over MCP and it can write the script, create narration, time captions and build the scenes; you review and export. In Mapimator, the AI Director assists inside the editor but works from credits and is not your own external agent.
Which is better for history and battle-map channels?
Mapimator explicitly courts history and military creators and gives fine manual control over markers and movements. Mapflyover suits narrated explainers where boundaries, flag fills and a spoken script carry the breakdown. Many channels would honestly use both — try the same story in each free plan.
Prices and features checked on both official sites on 3 November 2026. Mapimator's monthly prices were shown as promotional (struck-through list prices) at the time of checking and are subject to change.
